How to Stitch On TikTok

If you’re not on TikTok, I’m pretty sure you’ve at least heard of it.

If not, it’s time to get out from under your rock! TikTok is the hottest social media app where people make funny, ironic, serious, and otherwise unique videos. They can be spoken videos, dances, or set to music and spoken over. I highly recommend falling down that rabbit hole if you want to be entertained.

It’s also a great platform for digital marketing!

In order to get the most out of your TikTok efforts, it helps to be acquainted with some of the video editing tools that make it such an addictive app.

This guide will get you started on the right foot; let’s learn how to stitch on TikTok!

What Is the Stitch Feature?

The stitch feature allows you to take a short clip of another person’s video, then add on to that clip with your own content.

TikTok users typically use this feature to film reaction videos, answer questions, or just provide their own thoughts on a subject.

In the video tutorial above, we provided an example of a video that any business owner can stitch, from TikTok user @beautyschoolblue. In the video, she says, “Tell me something a job has taught you that you will never forget.” This allows you to share valuable information that your clients wouldn’t even know to ask!

How to Stitch On TikTok

Sounds great? Still a little intimidated? Let’s walk through the process step-by-step.

Find the video you want to stitch, either on your FYP (that’s “For You Page”) or one you’ve liked. If it’s in your “liked” folder, open the video so it starts playing. (You can tap on the video to pause it.)

Next, look at the icons on the right side of your screen and look for the one at the bottom that looks like an arrow (this is the Share button). Sometimes it shows up as three dots but it functions the same way. Tap the arrow and another screen will pop up.

This pop up gives you options to share the video with your friends on or off the TikTok app, but you’ll also see a list of icons at the very bottom, including “Report,” “Save Video,” “Not Interested,” and more. Scroll over and select “Stitch.”

In some cases, this button will be grayed out, which means the creator disabled stitch capabilities for that video.

Next, you’ll want to select the portion of the original video that you want to react to.

After you select “Stitch,” the video will start playing, but you’ll also see a bar with red borders at the bottom of your screen with a vertical white bar. The white bar shows the frame of the video you’re currently watching, while the red border displays the first five seconds of the original video. Fortunately, you can change this!

Drag the edge of that red border to edit the length of the clip (up to five seconds). You can also drag the frames right or left to choose a specific portion of the video.

You can tap the screen to pause and play to make sure you like the portion you have selected. When you’re happy with your clip, click “Next.”

The next screen is where you record your portion of the video.

The app gives three different lengths—15 seconds, 60 seconds, and 3 minutes—but we always recommend choosing the longest length possible. If you don’t use up the full time, TikTok will automatically shorten your video, but it won’t give you extra time if you run out.

To record (or pause recording), tap the big red button in the bottom center of the screen. Alternatively, hold the button down to record and lift your finger up to pause. To zoom in and out, hold the red button and move your thumb up and down.

Once you’re finished recording your portion, preview your video by clicking the check mark in the bottom right corner. If you want to go back and make changes, click click the backwards < symbol at the top left of your screen.

This is also where you would add voiceover effects, adjust volume, overlay text or stickers, or filters. While these features can add some “sparkle” to your video, they aren’t necessary.

If everything looks great, click Next.

The next screen allows you to post your video! Add some description text along with any relevant hashtags. You’ll also see options to tag other TikTok users, add a location, make your video private, and “More Options.” This is where you can choose whether to let other people comment, duet, or stitch with your video.

The default option is to allow all of the above. If you want to turn stick off, toggle the “Allow Stitch” button until it turns gray.

Once you’re done, you can either save your video to Drafts or publish it by hitting the red “Post” button on the bottom of your screen.

Congratulations on your first stitch! May the algorithm be ever in your favor.
